rekonstrukcii.jpgResearches in the domain of physical anthropology began within the Archaeological Department of the museum in 1983. The Anthropological Cabinet was established in 2001.

The Cabinet deals with research of skeleton finds discovered in archaeological excavations of necropolises. Around 10,000 individual skeletons from all archaeological periods have been analysed. They come from the following prehistoric sites: Markova Sušica, Varvara and Hipodrom (Skopje), Vodovrati and Ulanci (Veles), Milci and Vardarski Rid (Gevgelija), Dedeli (Valandovo), Otošnica and Opila (Kriva Palanka), as well as the medieval ones: Demir Kapija, Viničko Kale (Vinica), Pepelište and Bistrenci (Negotino), Dunje (Prilep), Orta Džamija and Vodoča (Strumica) and Plaošnik (Ohrid).

The Anthropological Cabinet carries out reconstruction of the physical characteristics of people in the past, the paleodemographic features of the population, ethno-genetic and anthoropogenetic processes in the prehistoric and historic periods, as well as paleopathological traits of the people in Macedonia. Several long-term research projects have been carried out, such as “Anthropological Features of the Medieval Population of Crkvište – Demir Kapija”, “Anthropological Profile of the Ancient Population of Stobi” and “Medieval Population of Orta Džamija and Vodoča – Strumica”. The results have been published in four monographs and some thirty articles in scholarly magazines.

In 2004 the Museum of Macedonia staged the exhibition titled “Man in Macedonia throughout Prehistory and History". It presented skeletons of thirteen selected individuals dating from the span of the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, as well as their two- and three-dimensional reconstructions in Sculptures and Drawings.
