The national institution Museum of Macedonia is one of the oldest museums in the country; its collection were started at the beginning of XX century. The museum is of a complex type, and it stores, preserves, processes and presents the cultural and historical heritage of Macedonia from its prehistory until nowadays. The Museum is organised in such a way that these areas are divided into departments that are led by specialists – archaeologists, philologists epigraphs, numismatists, anthropologists, ethnologists, historians, art historians, architects, artists, conservation experts. The material comes to the museum via research and buy-out. Here one can obtain an expert opinion on the different types of objects that are also private property.
Located in the Old Skopje Bazaar, the Museum of Macedonia covers more than 10,000 m2, 6,000 m2 of which are continuous museum area for permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Kuršumli An, a monument of culture from the middle of XVI century is also within the Museum; it presents stone monuments, a lapidary. This beautiful space is often used for music, theatre and exhibition events in the cultural life of Skopje.
The Museum also covers the museum collections in:
- Dragi Tozija house of culture in Resen;
- Iskra central library in Kočani;
- 25 May house of culture in Valandovo;
- Memorial rooms in the villages of Bituše, Galičnik and Gorno Vranovci.
